Hundreds of British soldiers face being stuck in Afghanistan for weeks longer than they had expected as a result of the G4S scandal, which has seen 3,500 troops drafted in to provide security during the Olympic Games.
Commanding officers have warned that the additional demands, including delays to training and holidays, could have a knock-on effect on operations and require servicemen and women to extend their six-month tours of duty by up to a month. A senior British Army source yesterday said bomb-disposal personnel were among those most at risk of having to stay longer in the conflict zone.
Some 3,500 servicemen and women will be deployed at the Games after the private firm G4S admitted last week that it had signed up only 4,000 of the 10,400 security staff it had been contracted to provide. The Home Secretary, Theresa May, pledged that all personnel called to work at Olympic venues would not lose leave, "even if it has to be rescheduled".
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is believed to be trying to keep the number of operationally deployable soldiers used at the Olympics to a minimum, to relieve pressure on the Afghan operation.
An MoD spokeswoman yesterday said concerns over the impact on Afghanistan "have not been mentioned" at the department. She added: "Afghanistan remains the priority for the MoD. This [Olympic deployment] is really important to us and it is going to mean changes, but we can't affect operations overseas to conduct domestic duties."
But one officer said that many personnel preparing to deploy to Afghanistan in October, as part of Operation Herrick 17, had been warned that they could be staying longer than expected.
He added: "If the Government wants to allow everyone to get their holidays in after the Olympics, there will be a knock-on effect, as some of these will inevitably be due to go to Afghanistan next year.
"Either they reduce the length of pre-deployment training for the next group, or they let them arrive in Afghanistan later. There is an expectation that the tour dates will be affected."
Patrick Mercer, a Conservative MP and former Army officer, said the particular demands of supporting thousands of troops at the Olympics would have a direct effect on the British effort in Afghanistan. He said: "The large number of soldiers who have been called up to the Olympics will have to be supported.
"There are a number of specialist troops, including the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, signals, catering and ordnance disposal, who are very likely to be extended in Afghanistan as a result."
Forces personnel and families last year warned that individuals and their close relations, especially children, would suffer most from extended tours, after it emerged that the Government was considering doubling the standard tour length to 12 months.
Labour's defence spokesman, Kevan Jones, said last night: "It is shocking that the frontline in Afghanistan could be hit by the Government's Olympic security shambles. Full training is essential and tours are carefully planned to maximise strength. Compromising either would have very real military implications."

LONDON (AP) ? With the opening ceremony less than two weeks away, there's a mad dash to the finish line at the Olympics and it has nothing to do with sprinters.
Hundreds of construction workers are toiling away inside the Olympic Park, laying cables, installing seats and adding the last layers of sparkle and polish to the venues.
There's plenty to do.
"It's looking a bit industrial isn't it?" said Chris Allen, a Londoner who came to the edge of the park to have a look. "I am not seeing England's green fields. I do hope it's going to look better."
Shades of Athens, where chronic delays pushed workers to the brink to complete preparations in time for the games to start in 2004? Hardly, say London organizers who have prided themselves on finishing their massive construction project ahead of time and on budget. Things may look a bit messy now, they say, but all will be fine by the time the curtain goes up, on July 27, when the torch is lit.
"We're not at the stage yet where we're ready to flick the TV on," James Bulley, director of venues for organizing committee LOCOG, told The Associated Press. "The athletes aren't ready to start competing yet, either. We want all our venues to look absolutely spectacular and pristine.
"The venues are ready. We're now just doing the final setup for the games. We're in a good place. We're on track. There's nothing I'm worried about."
The last few weeks and days are all about putting up signs, fitting in the remaining seats and completing the landscaping.
"We will be mowing lawns right up to the opening ceremony," LOCOG chairman Sebastian Coe told the AP.
The last thing organizers need at this point is a crisis over readiness of the venues. At the moment, they're coping with the fallout from a bungled contract by private security group G4S that forced the government to call in about 3,500 additional troops ? many just returned from tours of duty in Afghanistan ? to fill the shortfall.
A walk through the 560-acre Olympic Park in east London this weekend, between yet another bout of rain showers, showed the scale of what remains to be done: a small army of workers, a sea of white tents, cranes, bulldozers, upturned tables and chairs, humming generators, television cables and rigging, a maze of fences.
Paul Gauger, who works for the tourism agency Visit Britain, surveyed a sad-looking wild flower patch near the aquatics center but took it in stride.
"This is all cosmetic stuff," he said. "Look! There are some flowers growing over there!"
Bulley said the venues, after the construction and fit-out phases, are now in their final "bump-in" period. Television networks from around the world are moving in and cabling the venues for their cameras. LOCOG's "look'" teams are completing the signage and color schemes. Sports equipment is being shipped in.
"We're still putting in seats at probably 10 or so venues," Bulley said. "We're putting in 1,000 seats a day."
The "live site" in the Olympic Park ? a grassy area where spectators can watch the events on a giant screen and listen to musical entertainment ? is also unfinished.
"The bump-in looks quite messy, but you leave this to the last stages," Bulley said. "It's always the last thing you do in getting events ready. We want to work these venues right up to when the athletes are coming in so they look as good as possible."
Olympic Park isn't the only place getting dolled up.
So is Horse Guards Parade, the ceremonial parade ground a stone's throw from the Prime Minister's Downing Street residence in central London, and site of beach volleyball. It's a temporary venue which requires stands and 5,000 tons of sand brought in from a quarry south of London. Imagine a giant sandbox. Work started only late last month after the Trooping of the Color ceremony marking Queen Elizabeth II's birthday.
Another key venue requiring special attention is ExCel. The conference and exhibition center in the Docklands area is being turned into multiple arenas hosting boxing, judo, table tennis, wrestling, fencing, taekwondo and weightlifting.
"We're well advanced," Bulley said. "We'll be ready to hand those arenas over as of early next week. We took the venues later than many of the others. We've always known the period we've had to deliver these venues. We track them very closely. We're in super shape."
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said it's normal for host cities to face a flurry of last-ditch issues.
"It's not peculiar for London," he said. "We've always had difficulties in the days leading up to the games in the previous games and the games were of an impeccable nature. This is something that does not worry us. We're confident that everything will be fine by the opening ceremony day."
Even Andrew Boff, a member of the London Assembly and vocal critic of the Olympic project, has no doubts.
"It's the nature of any games," he said. "They look unfinished before you get there. But the venues are ready. They've been tested. You can do a lot in 12 days. If it weren't ready, Seb Coe would have his Lordship or knighthood taken away."

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft is absorbing a $6.2 billion charge to reflect that one of the biggest deals in its 37-year history turned out to be a dud.
The non-cash charge announced Monday could saddle Microsoft Corp. with a loss for its fiscal fourth quarter ended in June. Analysts polled by FactSet had predicted Microsoft would earn about $5.3 billion for the period. The company hasn't suffered a quarterly loss during the past 20 years, according to its website.
Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Wash., is scheduled to release its latest quarterly results on July 19.
The world's largest software maker blamed the setback on the disappointing performance of aQuantive. That's an online advertising service that Microsoft bought for $6.3 billion in 2007 to mount a more serious challenge to one of its biggest rivals, Internet search leader Google Inc.
The aQuantive deal ranked as the most expensive deal in Microsoft's history until it was eclipsed last year by the company's $8.5 billion purchase of Internet video chat service Skype.
Investors can only hope Skype works out better than aQuantive.
Microsoft's $6.2 billion charge represents a sobering acknowledgement that aQuantive didn't bring in as much online advertising revenue as envisioned, forcing management to write off most of the purchase price.
To add to Microsoft's mortification, Google has been milking the acquisition of an aQuantive rival to widen its lead in the steadily growing online ad market. Google bought DoubleClick for $3.2 billion about eight months after Microsoft took control of aQuantive,
Since then, Google's annual profit and advertising sales have more than doubled. Last year, Google earned $9.7 billion and collected $36.5 billion in ad revenue.
Microsoft's online division has sustained losses totaling of nearly $9 billion since the company bought aQuantive. The online division generated $2.5 billion in revenue during Microsoft's fiscal 2011, just $54 million more than in fiscal 2007.
Although the online division has been faring slightly better in the past year, "the company's expectations for future growth and profitability are lower than previous estimates," Microsoft said in a Monday statement.
Bing, a search engine that Microsoft unveiled four years ago, has been getting more usage, but most of its gains have come at the expense of a business partner, Yahoo Inc. Microsoft's search technology has been powering searches on Yahoo's website for nearly two years, but that alliance hasn't dented Google's market share.
Google's share of the U.S. search advertising market has risen from 74 percent in 2010 to 78 percent this year, according to the research firm eMarketer. Meanwhile, Yahoo's share U.S. search advertising has fallen from 10 percent in 2010 to less than 5 percent this year while Microsoft's cut has remained unchanged at 7 percent.
BGP Financial Partners analyst Colin Gillis doesn't expect the hefty charge to dampen investors' enthusiasm as the anticipation builds for the upcoming release of Microsoft's latest version of the Windows operating system that remains the company's biggest moneymaker. The revisions in Windows 8, expected to hit the market this fall, are being counted on to help revive personal computer sales and establish Microsoft as a major player in the tablet computer market.
"AQuantive didn't work out, but everyone already pretty much knew that," Gillis said. "Now, they are just mopping up."
Microsoft shares shed 13 cents to $30.43 in Monday's extended trading. At that level, Microsoft's stock price has still posted a 17 percent gain so far this year.

Northern Pakistan is often in the headlines, but the news is rarely good. Here's an exception: Pakistan's national animal, the markhor, has made a comeback.
Markhors (Capra falconeri) are large wild goats with corkscrew horns that can reach up to 160 centimetres on males. They live in the mountains of Pakistan and its neighbours, and were initially listed as endangered by the IUCN in 1984. This status was reconfirmed in 2008, when the organisation reported that the total population was less than 2500 individuals and declining by 20 per cent every two generations.
In an effort to protect the small remaining markhor population in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan, a local programme has trained wildlife rangers and set up 53 community conservation committees in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society.
In 1999, the Pakistani government estimated there were 1000 markhors left in Gilgit-Baltistan. This year the community-led survey reported nearly 300 individuals, which, according to the WCS, means there are now around 1500 of the iconic goats in this region - a good climb even for this agile animal.

The road had been shut by armed police during the morning rush hour after the Megabus coach, which was travelling from Preston to London Victoria, pulled over on the hard shoulder of its own accord following allegations made against a person on board.
Local reports suggested the passenger was seen pouring a liquid into a container which then began smoking.
However, despite sending specialist officers on board and readying fire and ambulance crews at the scene, Staffordshire police have now said the incident it effectively at an end.
According to reports this was later said to be a 'health improvement aid for smokers' which gave off vapour leading to the security alert.
The coach has also now been moved away from the scene of the evacuation for further routine tests.
'Following an initial assessment we can confirm that no-one has been injured and there is no danger to passengers at the scene or other travellers on the motorway,' the police said.
'We are not treating this as a counter-terrorism incident at this time.'
The authorities also said that the motorway was likely to be re-opened shortly, and no arrests have been made.
Police were called to the scene at 8.20am as the coach headed south on the motorway.
Armed counter-terrorism police had surrounded the vehicle and evacuated the 48 passengers on board, after it stopped on the hard shoulder between junctions T3 and T4 at Weeford Park Plaza near Lichfield, Staffordshire.
A forensic officer in a decontamination suit was also seen entering the vehicle following the evacuation, while army bomb disposal vehicles also attended the scene.
The bus company said at the time they had been 'assisting police with their inquiries into an allegation made against a passenger who was travelling on board one of our services'.
According to reports, all the passengers were led off the bus and taken to the opposite carriageway where they were made to sit in a cordon.
The incident occurred shortly after six people were arrested in London this morning as part of an ongoing counter-terrorism operation, leading to fears the two incidents could be linked.
Two men and a woman were detained in Ealing, while three men were arrested at addresses in Newham in east London.
Police said they were searching properties and a business premises in east, north and west London, but have stressed the arrests are not linked to the Olympics or Paralympics.
The two events were entirely unrelated, police have since stressed.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? Jeneba Tarmoh has conceded her spot in the 100 meters rather than race against training partner Allyson Felix.
Tarmoh notified USA Track and Field on Monday of her intention to withdraw. Her agent, Kimberly Holland, already made it known that Tarmoh would not participate in a runoff Monday night to break a third-place tie at the U.S. track trials.
In an email sent through her agent to USATF, Tarmoh said: "I understand that with this decision I am no longer running the 100m dash in the Olympic Games and will be an alternate for the event."
USATF President Stephanie Hightower said the organization is "disappointed" Tarmoh had a change of heart.

With all the star power at the BET Awards ? Kanye West, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce and Samuel L. Jackson, to name a few ? the most stirring moment came not from a superstar, but from the mother of one.
Whitney Houston's mother, Cissy, provided the emotional highlight of Sunday's ceremony as she sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in tribute to her late daughter, leaving audience members like Beyonce and Soulja Boy in tears.
Mariah Carey opened the tribute, and her voice wavered as she told stories about Houston. She recalled the last time she saw Houston last year, and how the two laughed and gossiped together.
"I miss my friend," Carey said. "I miss hearing her voice and laughter."
R&B singer Monica was vocally top-notch as she sang "I Love the Lord," a gospel song once sang by Houston; Brandy sang two upbeat Houston hits, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "I'm Your Baby Tonight." Chaka Khan blazed the stage with "I'm Every Woman," which Houston remade. Gary Houston, Whitney's brother, also performed; and Houston's "Waiting to Exhale" castmates ? Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine ? also honored the singer.
But it was Cissy Houston's soaring performance that brought the audience to their feet, and had many dabbing their eyes. The tribute came five months after Houston's death: She died the night before the Grammy Awards of an accidental drowning complicated by heart disease and cocaine use.
As compelling as that moment was, the show was also defined by its low points: Entire segments of performances, from Nicki Minaj to Rick Ross, were muted out due to foul language and obscenities, though several vulgarities were heard on air.
It started during the opening number by West's G.O.O.D. music group, which included Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz. There were long moments of censored silence when the rappers performed "Mercy," though not all the offending words were bleeped out. Moments later, Jackson, the show's host, was joined by Spike Lee as they did a comedic version of Jay-Z and West's hit song "... In Paris," to laughs.
"Two distinguished Morehouse men," Lee joked after the performance, referencing the alma mater of the two.
The censor police also worked overtime when Rick Ross performed with his Maybach Music Group and during Minaj's performance and acceptance speech for best female hip-hop artist. Minaj's win was her third consecutive time taking the prize.
"I really, really appreciate BET for keeping this category alive, and I appreciate all the female rappers doing their thing, past, present and future," she said, before uttering an obscenity.
Best gospel winner Yolanda Adams, who also performed, gently took some of her peers to task, urging them to act mature and use their fame wisely.
"We need all of y'all," she said onstage. "I'm saying the world needs everyone in this room. Please make sure that you use your gift responsibly, 'cause we're watching. Our babies are watching, and they want to be like us."
West, the most nominated act of the night with seven, and Jay-Z won the ceremony's top prize, earning video of the year for "Otis." They also won best group.
Beyonce was the second most nominated act with six. She won video director of the year (along with Alan Ferguson) and best female R&B artist and thanked the genre and her female influences.
"I fell in love with music by listening to R&B. It's the core of who I am," she said, giving special thanks to Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige and "Whitney Houston, my angel."
When she lost video of the year to Jay-Z and West, she playfully hit her husband and laughed. The joking continued: Moments later, as West was giving his acceptance speech, Jay-Z interrupted him and said: "Excuse me Kanye, I'm gonna let you continue, but ...," and the audience erupted with laughter, recalling West's infamous interruption of Taylor Swift's MTV Video Music Awards speech a few years back.
Chris Brown was also a double winner, picking up his second consecutive win for best male R&B artist, and the "Fandemonium" award for a third time.
Brown also performed in his first televised appearance since the New York City nightclub brawl between his entourage and Drake's. Brown, his girlfriend, his bodyguard and NBA star Tony Parker were among those injured in the June 14 encounter, where bottles were thrown.
Drake didn't show, though he was named best male hip-hop artist.
The tone of night fluctuated frequently, as the show shifted from hotly anticipated performances to solemn moments to irreverence. Usher performed his groove "Climax," and Minaj sported a blond wig with pink tips as she performed the songs "Champion" and "Beez in the Trap," which featured 2 Chainz.
D'Angelo returned to the television spotlight with his first performance in years as he attempts a comeback.
The night also featured some tributes to deceased greats: Chante Moore performed a medley of Donna Summer's hits and Valerie Simpson sang a song in honor of her husband and writing partner Nick Ashford. Don Cornelius, Dick Clark and Hal Jackson were remembered. Even West offered tributes: after his performance, he name-dropped Rodney King and Whitney Houston in a verse that got cheers from the crowd, including his girlfriend, Kim Kardashian.
Presenters included Taraji P. Henson, Tyler Perry, Kerry Washington and Jamie Foxx, who wore a T-shirt that had a picture of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen killed by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman.
Frankie Beverly featuring Maze were honored with the lifetime achievement award, and they were serenaded with performances by Tyrese, Faith Evans and Joe. The Rev. Al Sharpton received the humanitarian award, and urged the crowd to vote this November.
"This election is not just about Obama, this is about your momma," he said.
