As the Windows 8 tablet market become more competitive, price will become an increasingly important differentiator. Dell hopes to get a jump on that trend with its announcement that it is offering a cheaper version of its Latitude 10 Win 8 slate.
Most of the new "essentials" configuration remains the same as the more full-featured Latitude 10, including the Intel Atom?Z2760 processor and 10.1-inch?1,366x768 display complete with Corning Gorilla Glass. However, the new version eschews a swappable battery for a sealed one, and it also lacks a few other niceties like a flash for its rear-facing camera and?mini-USB and mini-HDMI ports. It no longer supports digitizer pens like the?Wacom Active Stylus, though it still works with a passive stylus.?
The result, however, is a starting price of $499 for the 32GB edition, or $579 for the 64GB flavor. (The 64GB model is available right now, while the 32GB version will bow later this year.) That makes the Latitude 10 essentials config perfect for the markets Dell is targeting: schools looking for an affordable tablet for its students, and enterprises planning to roll out a fleet of Windows 8 devices for its employees. For the latter segment, there's the optional dock that includes four USB ports, HDMI output, and Ethernet jack for $169.?
